Full Time Catechists The Legionaries of Christ implemented a plan for forming and maintaining professional, full-time catechists in Latin America over 20 years ago. They have taken to heart Christ''s commandment, "Go and preach to all people, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún In 1970 Pope Paul VI entrusted the Legion of Christ with the care of the Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún which covers 19,360 square miles of the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). Paul VI appointed Mons. Jorge Bernal Vargas, L.C., as its first prelate. Most of the natives in this region are Mayans whose population numbers approximately 850,000. They work as farmers or manual laborers. For their spiritual care, Bishop Bernal counts on the presence of 10% of all Legionary priests and numerous Regnum Christi lay coworkers. The Legionaries serving as missionaries have built approximately 230 churches and chapels since 1970. Some of the indigenous laity work as full-time catechists.
Institute for Evangelization This institute founded in the United States prepares catechists who will effectively promote Catholic doctrine. It provides formation in the areas of doctrine, catechetical methodology, spiritual and pastoral support. Faithful to the magisterium of the Church, the Institute for Evangelization places special emphasis on the permanent formation of catechists in the faith, encouraging them to be faithful witnesses of Christ''s love and message. The members of the Institute for Evangelization work together with local churches in catechesis and by sponsoring youth organizations. The Treasure of My Catholic Faith This is an educational project that seeks to promote knowledge of and appreciation for the treasure of Catholic faith both at home and at school.
